Business Activity Statements done properly. The first time.

Having your Business Activity Statements prepared correctly can avoid nasty headaches further down the track. 5-Star Accounts can take the stress and confusion Out of BAS time and have the experience and qualifications to do the task properly. We can make sure your wages, instalments and GST are all reported correctly - and on time. If you do need an extension, Andre can liaise with the ATO on your behalf, providing that you meet the criteria.

What is a Business Activity Statement?

BAS (Business Activity Statement) forms are used to report (and pay) the GST that your business has collected. At 5-Star Accounts, we can provide the correct information to be included on your BAS form and submit the form for you.

The ATO and the bookkeeping industry

Since March 2010, new government legislation requires that the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) regulates the bookkeeping industry. All bookkeepers providing BAS (Business Activity Statement) services must be registered as a BAS agent.

A registered BAS agent must fulfil the following criteria:

  • hold a certificate IV in financial services – bookkeeping or accounting;
  • hold membership to a recognised professional association;
  • have completed over 1000 hours of relevant experience;
  • hold professional indemnity insurance;
  • partake in ongoing professional development.

Registered BAS Agents: how they benefit and protect you

Regulation of the bookkeeping industry by the ATO greatly protects you, the business owner ,as now only experienced, qualified individuals can complete your BAS statements, ensuring that the project is completed correctly the first time.

In the past, anyone was able to complete an MYOB or Quicken bookkeeping course, put a plaque on the wall and start charging for their services. However, the outcome wasn’t so pleasant. Mistakes were made by some ‘less than competent’ consultants, leaving business owners with quite a mess on their hands. What was already a stressful experience for some developed into a nightmare. Usually, the small business owner would be left to find someone else to remedy the situation, hoping that they would do a better job. Events like these were not only stressful , but time-consuming and expensive.

Today, all BAS agents must adhere to a professional code of conduct, relating to:

  • confidentiality;
  • competence;
  • independence (acting lawfully);
  • honesty and integrity.

Any consultant that breaches this code of conduct may have their registration terminated and be fined anything up to $137,500.
